Leny Yoro explains why he performed Real Madrid U-turn as key reasons for Man Utd move revealed

Leny Yoro has explained exactly why he performed a U-turn on his proposed move to Real Madrid and signed for Manchester United instead.

On Thursday evening, Manchester United announced the acquisition of center-back Yoro from Lille, finalizing one of the most surprising and aggressive transfer moves in recent memory.

Just days ago, the 18-year-old, hailed as a ‘generational talent’, appeared destined for Real Madrid after talks between his representatives and the Spanish giants.

He was reportedly eager to join the reigning European champions. Several other interested parties, including Liverpool, withdrew from pursuing Yoro assuming he was set on Madrid.

However, on Thursday, Manchester United confirmed the signing of the young French defender for a fee of £52 million ($65m; €62m) plus potential add-ons of €8 million (£6.73m).

Yoro has signed a five-year contract extending until 2029, with the option for an additional year.

According to The Athletic, Real Madrid’s offer to Lille was less than half of what United offered.

If Yoro had remained at Lille, Madrid likely would have signed him for free next summer when his contract expired.

In an interview with United’s media team, Yoro explained his decision to move to Old Trafford:

“Since my initial conversations with the club, they outlined a clear plan for my development within this exciting project, showing great care for me and my family,” Yoro said. “It’s an incredible honor to join a club of United’s stature.”

Despite Yoro’s comments, once Lille accepted United’s bid, he faced a significant decision.

According to The Athletic, former United players, including Rio Ferdinand, were involved in persuading Yoro that United offered the best opportunity for his development. Moreover, United’s contract offer reportedly included better terms than Madrid’s.
