Manchester United are prepared to bring Mason Greenwood back for pre-season training if they fail to secure a buyer in the next fortnight. The club is actively seeking a permanent transfer for Greenwood, who impressed with 10 goals in 36 matches during his loan spell at Getafe in La Liga last season. Lazio has expressed interest in acquiring him, but their £30 million offer falls short of United’s £40 million valuation.

Greenwood, who has earned one cap for England, is keen to secure a move after United initially planned to reintegrate him into Erik ten Hag’s squad last summer, only to reverse course amid controversy surrounding dropped legal charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling behavior. Despite public criticism and concerns, United opted to loan him to Getafe instead of recalling him.

Should Greenwood remain under contract, he will be eligible for pre-season training, a decision that could spark further controversy given the sensitive nature of his case. Despite not featuring for United since his suspension in January 2022 following an arrest that resulted in all charges being dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, United is motivated to sell Greenwood due to potential profitability under Premier League sustainability regulations, leveraging his academy upbringing.
