Arsenal have informed two senior players that they are no longer part of Mikel Arteta’s plans, while confirming their desire to retain Jakub Kiwior. The Gunners are expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, though it would be an overstatement to call it a squad overhaul under sporting director Edu Gaspar.

Following a close title race with Manchester City last season, Arsenal is poised to make several changes to bridge the gap to the reigning champions. This comes amidst reports that Pep Guardiola has urged City chiefs to pursue Joshua Kimmich, underlining the need for Arsenal to stay proactive.

According to TBR Football, Arsenal have notified both Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney that they are free to leave. Despite Kiwior being linked with a move away this month, particularly with AC Milan showing interest, Arsenal is keen to keep the Poland international.

Kiwior has expressed interest in a return to Serie A, but Arsenal prefers to retain him due to his versatility as a strong backup at both centre-back and left-back. While Kiwior faces criticism for his technical skills on the left flank, it’s essential to note his primary role as Gabriel Magalhães’ deputy in central defence.

The decision to let go of Zinchenko and Tierney marks a strategic shift. Tierney’s profile does not align with Arteta’s future plans, making his departure less surprising. On the other hand, Zinchenko, despite being a key figure in transforming Arsenal’s playing style with his inverted role, is considered inadequate to meet the club’s current demands. This explains why Takehiro Tomiyasu ended the season as the preferred left-back.

Retaining Kiwior while allowing Zinchenko and Tierney to leave indicates a focused approach to building a squad capable of competing at the highest level. The upcoming summer activities will be pivotal in shaping Arsenal’s quest for Premier League glory.
