Arsenal Eyes Lutsharel Geertruida Amidst Competition

Arsenal is reportedly set to compete with Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain for Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida. Following their close second-place finish to Manchester City in the Premier League, Arsenal is looking to bolster their squad, and manager Mikel Arteta sees Geertruida as a key addition to their defense.

While a new centre-forward remains Arsenal’s top priority due to underwhelming performances from Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah during the 2023-24 season, the Gunners are also focusing on other areas, particularly their defense. Despite having versatile defenders like Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu, Arteta is keen on adding more depth with a player like Geertruida, who offers flexibility by playing as a full-back, centre-back, and defensive midfielder.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal is preparing to rival Liverpool and PSG for Geertruida’s signature. The 23-year-old Dutch international has made a significant impact at Feyenoord, with 11 goals and 24 assists in 198 appearances. His contributions have helped Feyenoord secure one Eredivisie title and two KNVB-Beker trophies, making him one of the standout academy graduates in recent years.

Geertruida’s current contract has just one year remaining, increasing the likelihood of a transfer this summer. The departure of Arne Slot, who played a crucial role in Geertruida’s development and has now moved to Liverpool, marks the beginning of a new chapter at Feyenoord under Brian Priske. This transition could further prompt Geertruida’s move.

While Slot’s connection to Feyenoord makes Geertruida an obvious target for Liverpool, PSG is also showing strong interest. Reports suggest that Geertruida could command a transfer fee of around £32 million, a significant amount for a player who has only played in the Dutch league. Despite this, his inclusion in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024 underscores his rising profile, even though he remained an unused substitute in their opening match against Poland.

No final decisions on Geertruida’s future are expected until the Netherlands conclude their participation in Euro 2024. As the summer transfer window heats up, Arsenal will face stiff competition from Liverpool and PSG to secure the promising defender.
