De Jong: I had the worst night of my life with Barcelona because of Hansi Flick
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has admitted that the club’s new coach, Hansi Flick, caused the worst night he had in his football career.
Frenkie de Jong celebrates surpassing 200 appearances for FC Barcelona and took the opportunity to speak to the club’s media. With 234 official matches played so far, the Dutchman reflected on his five years as a Barça player
Since his arrival in the summer of 2019, the Dutchman has become practically untouchable in midfield and is now the sixth Dutch player to reach that number of appearances for Barcelona.
“It all happened very quickly because you don’t stop to think about how many games you’ve played, but of course it’s a source of pride ,” said De Jong. “ There’s still a lot left, but I would like to be the Dutchman who has played the most games in Barcelona’s history.”
Frenkie de Jong is the Dutch player with the fifth-highest number of appearances as a Barcelona player. He is ahead of Michael Reiziger (252), Patrick Kluivert (257), Ronald Koeman (264) and Phillip Cocu, who is the Dutch player with the most appearances in Barcelona’s entire history.
When asked about the most tragic moment in his career with Barcelona, he chose the crushing defeat by Bayern Munich 2-8, which was led by German coach Hansi Flick at the time.
“I think it was the worst night of my career at Barcelona. Maybe even in the history of Barcelona,” Frenkie said. “I didn’t go to every game and I didn’t experience it the same way, but as a player I experienced it differently. It was also the worst game of my career so far. The first nights after, I couldn’t sleep well.”
