In one of the most anticipated matches of the 2024 Copa America, Brazil and Colombia lived up to the hype.
The two South American powers played to an exciting 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening, in a game which saw exciting attacking play, great goals, great saves, and just about everything in-between. The match was played in front of a bursting 70,971 fans at Levi’s Stadium, many of whom wore the Colombia yellow shirt, along with Brazil’s traditional yellow kit, making for a distinctive yellow glow to the crowd.
The match was also played at high intensity for nearly the entire game, which is impressive in normal times, but even more considering temperatures were in the 90s the entire match.
Raphinha gave Brazil an early lead with an outstanding in-swinging free kick goal, and it looked like Brazil would be in pole position to win the game and the group. But Colombia’s quick counter-pressing, creating turnovers and quick attacks finally turned into a goal just before halftime.
Jhon Cordoba floated inside from his normal right wing spot, received the ball, and Crystal Palace right back Daniel Munoz saw the space and took it, with Wendell following Cordoba into the middle. Cordoba found Munoz in the box and Munoz finished first time past Allison to level the score. Both teams continued to attack and try and find a winner, but Allison and Colombia’s Camilo Vargas came up with multiple terrific saves.
With the draw Colombia finishes as Group D winners, while Brazil advances in second place. It sets up a pair of quarterfinals this weekend – Colombia faces Panama, while Brazil has to take on Uruguay. If both Brazil and Colombia win, they’ll meet again in the semifinals.
